Skwid Ink: Leftfield jazz crew Skwid Ink, one of the many impressive bands coming out of the College of Music. Led by pianist George MacDonald  Joe Whettam quartet : Joe Whettam guitar, Joel Robinson piano, Fraser Kerslake bass, Pete Udal drums. The Wardrobe Quintet with Casper Hatlestad, Guitar, Ola Lauvås, Trumpet  Benjamin Rekstad, piano, Anders Hjemmen – bass  Jostein Braaten, Drums. Jazztronica group taking influences from a wide range of genres - the poetry of Scandinavian nature electronic effects, and the underground music of their second home, Leeds They recently recorded their first album “Flight”

Featuring the second in our emerging artists feature from this year's final year of the BA jazz course at Leeds College of Music . Vocalist Alžbeta Turčányiová  sextet explore contemporary jazz with a focus on world music, folk and progresive rock fusion with Joe Boyes piano Michael Graham tenor saxophone Martin Jones guitar Chris Seller electric bass Daniel Shearer drums. Drummer Abbie Finn and her Quartet featuring Manny Lall, Jeffrey Hewer, Harry Keeble.  Jordan Dinsdale Quintet - Taking influence from fundamental jazz giants such as Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter and infusing this with elements of the contemporary. With a touch of Dave Holland, this band exude New York Jazz! Jordan Dinsdale drums with Fergus Vickers- guitar, Will Howard - sax, Sam Quintana- bass, George Macdonald- piano

Thursday evening May 18 @Seven Arts Doors 7.30pm £16/14 (NUS £5) Jason Rebello solo on grand piano

British pianist Jason Rebello is regarded as one of the most inventive pianists to emerge from the UK since he burst onto the scene in the early 90’s with a run of albums for the BMG label. Jason has worked mainly with electronic keyboards in his own groups (as well as with Sting and Jeff Beck); but now he has decided it’s time to say something on the instrument he loves. In early 2016 Jason will release his debut solo piano album, featuring mostly originals inspired by the people and places that have been important in his career. Jason will be played solo grand piano for  the concert at Seven Arts. Support from Phil Green’s “Quiet Jazz project”

Nel Begley vocals  Nick Fitch guitar, Roz MacDonald bass and Eliot Richards sax 

Ella Fitzgerald was the greatest vocalist the jazz world has ever heard. Her extraordinary diction, timing, sense of swing and all round joie de vivre meant that her versions of hundreds of great songs were the definitive ones. The songbooks of Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hart, Irving Berlin, and George Gershwin had no finer interpreter. Rising star vocalist Nel Begley will focus on the songs performed on the Ella and guitarist Joe Pass

Leeds College of Music Student Union Big Band has established itself in the city as one of the best big bands winning prizes at the most recent North of England 2017 Big Band competition in Sunderland. Over 20 members strong, it is an exciting ensemble with a big sound and a big ambition. It is led by drummer Abbie Finn

Danny Barley - Trombone, compositions, arrangements Eliot Richards - Tenor Saxophone Tom Sharp - Trumpet  Chris Bland – Piano, Sam Quintana - Double Bass Jordan Dinsdale – Drums  

Danny Barley is a freelance trombonist and Leeds College of Music alumnus from Hull. He started learning the trombone at the age of eight and has since been fortunate enough to work alongside many popular artists in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues and concert halls including Symphony Hall in Birmingham and The Cavern in Liverpool. He is currently a member of the prestigious National Youth Jazz orchestra. He will be performing a suite specially composed for this concert

Nicola Farnon bass and vocals, Dave Newton piano, Tony Ormesher guitar and Steve Brown drums

Nicola Farnon is widely recognised as one of the classiest jazz and swing musicians in the UK. She has a remarkable musical pedigree, both parents being professional classical musicians and her great uncle no less than the late Robert Farnon. Nicola’s new CD "So Farnon So Good" features her on double bass and vocals with some legends of the UK jazz scene. You can hear this music at Seven Arts. The bands' arrangements are all done by Nicola - with some melodic and extremely catchy originals thrown in for good measure. Support: John and Kathy Dyson duo

Leeds Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of Big Band Jazz under Musical Director, Colin Byrne. They delight in an eclectic mix of repertoire from Bebop, Blues and Ballads through to cutting-edge modern Jazz Orchestra numbers. Classic big band arrangements from Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus sit alongside numbers written specifically for the band by up-and-coming new composers. Concert  in aid of the Jo Cox community fund

Dales Jam was formed in 2003 in Skipton by a group of people of all ages and musical abilities, who wanted a time and a place to meet up and play music. Since then, under the guidance of jazz saxman Richard Ormrod the band has grown in numbers. They play world music based including African, Klezmer, Cuban, Asian together with Stevie Wonder, John Mclaughlin and John Coltrane. They recently performed a concert comprising interpretations/arrangements of the work of Bradford composer Frederick Delius.

A dynamic and ever innovating presence on the UK jazz scene, Glaswegian Corrie Dick is a musician recognised for his fluency, touch and abandon on the drum kit. His band “Impossible Things 'played for us memorably in the autumn. Little Lions' is his instrumental trio whose sound is characterised by warm, euphoric timbres as well as engaging good humour. Deadly if needs be, and considerate and friendly even when performing darker material, it melds together the realms of singer-songwriter, jazz, ambience, and emotive soundtracks in a brand new and utterly unique way.

John Settle on vibes, Al Morrison on guitar, Bob Birch on Hammond organ and Joe England on drums. Jazz, blues, funk and Latin paying homage to  Milt Jackson, Wes Montgomery, John Patton, Bobby Hutcherson, Jimmy Smith, George Benson. A showcase for this rarely heard group instrumentation.

FRIDAY evening July 21 @Seven Arts Doors 7.30pm £16/14 (NUS £5) US saxman Greg Abate with the Victor Gutierrez Trio

Greg Abate is a US jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer and international jazz recording artist. In the mid 70’s after finishing a four year program at Berklee College Of Music, Greg played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra and tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson in 1986 and ’87. Following this Greg ventured out as post hard bop soloist playing jazz festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe.

B.D Lenz guitar, James Rosocha- bass, Joe Falcey – drums

A welcome to Seven Jazz  return for US guitarist B D Lenz. Mix together the styles of Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, and Stevie Ray Vaughan and you have the recipe for contempo-jazz guitarist B.D. Lenz. This New York native has played guitar since his early teens, is a graduate of Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and has studied with such masters as Mike Stern, Vic Juris, and Charlie Banacos along the way.
