What a flying start we’ve had to 2017 - some incredible gigs so far zand this will be another! On Thus 9 Feb we offer a warm welcome back to Seven Jazz for New York based saxophonist/composer Seamus Blake, recognized as one of the finest exponents of contemporary jazz. British born and now New York based his music is known for its sophistication, bold improvisations and “sheer swagger". John Scofield, who hired Seamus for his “Quiet Band,” called him “extraordinary, a total saxophonist.” Throughout his 24 year career, Seamus has garnered considerable critical praise for his masterful playing, his fine compositional skills and for his facility as a leader.

He has been a feature on the New York scene for 20 years, especially as a featured soloist with the Mingus Big Band who has performed with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Thanks for the help in putting on this concert from ACE/Apollo/Norvoljazz network. The concert will be recorded by BBC Radio Three for their programme "Jazz Now"

Support is from Sam Quintana's "Wandering Monster" 8pm: Sam Quintana - Bass Ben Powling - Tenor Sax Calvin Travers - Guitar Aleks Podraza - Piano/Keys Ali Wells - Drums . We’re really pleased to welcome this dynamic and adventurous band formed from the members of two bands who played brilliant gigs for us over the last couple of years, Zeitgeist Trio and Stretch Trio. Combining all these talents in one energetic and creative whole, WANDERING MONSTER have very much emerged as a band to watch in Leeds and on the Northern jazz scene, winning the prestigious Jazz North Introduces Award for 2016. Approachable and full of energy, their brand of contemporary jazz mixes grooves with hooky melodies and intense improvisation. With recent appearances at a host of jazz festivals including Lancaster, Marsden, Liverpool and Scarborough, don’t miss out on seeing this very special support band! Here’s a sample of their music: And here’s a link to a two track EP they recorded in 2015 (download it here too!):
