Jim Hart: vibraphones; Michael Janisch: double bass; Dave Smith: drums

with guests: Hannes Riepler: guitar; Antonin Tri Hoang: alto saxophone

Award-winning multi-instrumentalist Jim Hart leads a ferociously skilled trio which is joined here by Austrian-born guitarist Hannes Riepler and French-based alto saxophonist Antonin Tri Hoang. Their original music ranges from New York’s ‘downtown’ sound to contemporary European subtlety and it draws on a diverse range of musical traditions, a devotion to raw energy, groove and rhythm, and powerful melody.

Cloudmakers Trio represents the culmination of over a decade of musical growth between three of the finest musicians currently working on the international jazz, improvised and alternative music scenes. Their enviable CVs boast a collective experience of performances across all genres of music while enjoying first-call status to the stars. And they have no boundaries; everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Evan Parker to Sir John Dankworth to Outhouse Ruhabi to Lee Konitz to Robert Plant has hired these popular musicians for their virtuosity and unbridled creativity.

Cloudmakers Trio effortlessly marry the complex with accessibility, the improvised with composed, and showcase original music that lies somewhere between New York’s downtown sound and the modern European tradition. As a result their music defies easy categorisation yet draws influence from a diverse range of traditions, featuring the under-exploited format of the vibraphone trio. While pushing the boundaries of what can be done with this instrumentation they remain devoted to risk taking, a deep groove and strong melodies.

After a very successful North American tour taking in Rochester, Vancouver, Vitoria and Twin Cities Jazz festivals, Cloudmakers Trio have invited two special guests to collaborate in a programme of new music penned by Jim Hart. Joined by Austrian-born guitarist Hannes Riepler and French-based alto axophonist Antonin Tri Hoang this new music will see the band enhancing their exciting rhythmical interplay with two great front line voices in what will surely result in their strongest programme of original, genre-twisting music to date.

“The Cloudmakers Trio brings together three of the most inventive players on the UK scene.” – All About Jazz

“The vibraphone remains one of the great unsung heroes of jazz’s arsenal but young British virtuoso Jim Hart has the wit and invention to make its mercurial charms immediately and abundantly apparent.” – The Metro

“London-based Cloudmakers Trio shakes up everything in sight on its second release. Abstract Forces further highlights the group’s exceptional vibraphone-bass-drums telepathy... draws from such diverse musical worlds-including free-jazz, funk, electronic experimentation, pure swing and unbridled improvisation... their music is not only impossible to resist, but gets better with repeated plays.”... Downbeat Magazine

“Hart has a positive genius for rhythmic hide-and-seek. His improvised lines grab your attention and won’t let go, no matter how many tricky corners he gets into. There’s no mistaking the musicianship and phenomenal togetherness of all three.”...4 Stars, The Observer
