BLUESFEST14 July - the programme
- Category: Reviews
So there is a cure for the Summertime blues!
Chapel Allerton's got the blues with our second Blues Festival BLUESFEST14 this coming July. Expanded from last year it will include five fantastic blues acts performing at Inkwell and Seven Arts
Sarah Gillespie – The Life of Bessie Smith@Seven Arts Thursday evening 3 July 8pm
Sarah Gillespie (guitar and vocals), Kit Downes (piano), Ben Bastin (bass), Enzo Zirilli (drums)
Bessie Smith is one of the most iconic artists in blues history. Her raw, visceral howl of a voice chronicled a life of gin-soaked bar room brawls, renegade lovers and bawdy nights of Harlem vaudeville. This evening the critically acclaimed Anglo-American songstress Sarah Gillespie takes to the stage with a fresh interpretation of her heroine, whose lucid jazz poetry, raucous humour and dark cathartic blues blazed a trail for generations
of performers.
